In brief: Peru

Peru: Peru’s health ministry has announced that the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank will assign US$250m (without providing further details) to modernise Peru’s public health system using telecommunications technology. According to Diego Venegas, deputy minister for healthcare delivery and insurance, the implementation of Integrated Delivery Networks (IDN) will allow for a more efficient health service. The move will improve access to diagnostic tests and other services that are currently only available in certain parts of the country, as well as introducing a new system that monitors the availability of medicines in pharmacies. There are plans to register 1,000 clinics to a new telemedicine network for remote diagnosis by the end of the year, as well as introducing a system known as 'e-Qhali' that will manage electronic health records and offer online appointments to reduce waiting times in clinics.
