In brief: Costa Rica

Costa Rica: President Carlos Alvarado and Finance Minister Rocío Aguilar announced the launch of a new 10-point action plan aimed at tackling tax evasion and helping address Costa Rica’s fiscal deficit. The plan expects to recover at least ₡50,000m (US$88m) in unpaid taxes this year. Some of the measures include enhancing the collection on 800 large taxpayers that owe the treasury ₡75,000m (US$130m) and improving customs control operations with automated technology. The plan will also check on 117,000 taxpayers that declared no taxable income last year and asks for the return of money incorrectly paid out to deceased pensioners. Alvarado also called on citizens to help combat tax evasion by reporting it through an app available on the finance ministry website.
