In brief: Colombia

Colombia: The European Union (EU) and Spain have signed a new agreement with the Colombian government under which they have agreed to help finance an economic development plan for Colombia’s southern Nariño department. The plan, which will cover the Nariño municipalities of Ipiales, Pasto, and Tumaco, has a budget of over €8.15m (US$9m). The EU’s ambassador to Colombia, Patricia Llombart, explained that the project will support the production of cacao, coconut, and milk, as well as aquaculture, horticulture, and tourism in these areas. It will also enhance public policies such as water sanitisation, economic development, and gender policies; and will help consolidate the local government and ethnic authorities. Sergio Londoño, the director of the international cooperation agency at Colombia’s presidential office, highlighted the relevance that the new agreement will have for Nariño, one of the areas most affected by Colombia’s internal armed conflict.
