In brief: Mexico

*The Mexican confederation of industrial chambers (Concamin) and the national freight chamber (Canacar) have released a new the report entitled ‘Strategic agenda on the impact of insecurity in the freight area’, which highlights the effects that public insecurity is having on the freight sector and the national economy and proposes measures to address the problem. Concamin’s president, José Refugio Muñoz López, said that the report shows that the states of Puebla, Michoacán, the Estado de México, and Tlaxcala concentrate 75% of all reported cases of freight theft, and that between 2015 and 2017 reports of freight theft cases in Mexico increased from 5,435 to 10,230. Indeed, the report shows that last year the direct and indirect losses due to theft in the freight sector amounted to M$92.5bn (US$4.5bn). The document  proposes three axes for tackling this problem: the adoption of additional preventive measures, improving response capacity, and simplification of judicial procedures.
