In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has called on the Guyanese government to return to the negotiation table and abandon the lawsuit it has taken before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the Hague over the historical bilateral dispute over the Essequibo region. Guyana filed a lawsuit before the ICJ back in March, asking the court to finally resolve the dispute which dates back to 1899. However, the Venezuelan government led by President Nicolás Maduro has said that it would not take part in a legal process at the ICJ, refusing to recognise the court’s jurisdiction to rule on the matter. Speaking during a TV interview about the matter, Rodríguez stated that “Guyana must return to the negotiating table, it is what must happen…We invite Guyana to return to the negotiating table”.
