Mexico: Assassinations and dirty tricks

As this issue went to press the Mexican general elections were less than two weeks away, on 1 July. The opinion polls were consistently placing left-winger Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) as the front-runner in the race. Whatever the outcome, the integrity of the electoral process was likely to remain tainted by a continuing wave of political killings, by evidence of illicit campaign funding, and by what could be described as a series of dirty tricks and social media manipulations.
