Colombia: Colombia’s national statistics agency (Dane) has released figures which show that in May Colombia’s unemployment rate stood at 9.7%. May marks the second consecutive month of an increase in unemployment; in March and April the figures were 9.4% and 9.5% respectively. The average unemployment rate from March to May was 9.5%, an increase on the average for same period of 2017 which was 9.3%. Nonetheless, although proportionally there was a year-on-year increase from May 2017 to May 2018 in the jobless population from 9.4% in 2017 to 9.7% in 2018, the total number of people in employment increased by 188,000. Indeed, May 2018 registered the largest recorded figure of people in work, 22.45m, since 2001.
