Guatemala requests TPS status

Guatemala: On 25 June Guatemala’s foreign minister, Sandra Jovel, sent a diplomatic note to the US government requesting that Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which temporarily allows those fleeing countries afflicted by war or natural disasters to live and work legally in the US, be granted to Guatemalan nationals. Jovel gave as the reason for the request the devastation caused by the 3 June eruption of the Fuego volcano, one of Central America’s most active volcanoes, which has left 112 people dead and more than 1.7m affected in Guatemala. The Guatemalan authorities estimate that 3m Guatemalans live in the US, 800,000 of them with an irregular immigration status. In recent months, however, the US administration led by President Donald Trump has cancelled TPS for Nicaragua, Haiti, El Salvador, and Honduras.
