In brief: Colombia

Colombia: Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos has signed a pact, along with leaders of political parties and supreme court justices among others, which commits the signatories to protect the lives of social leaders and human rights advocates and condemns violence against them. Santos presented the pact after having signed the statute of the opposition, a law which gives guarantees to political parties which oppose the government. The signing of the pact follows reports of increased violence against social leaders and human rights activists. According a report published on 5 July by the local NGO Instituto de Estudios para el Desarrollo y la Paz (Indepaz), 123 social leaders and human rights defenders have been murdered from the beginning of 2018 to 5 July 2018.
