Ecuador: In the latest stage of a legal battle lasting more than two decades, Ecuador’s constitutional court has confirmed a 2011 resolution that US multinational oil company Chevron is liable to pay US$9.5bn in compensation to indigenous communities in the Ecuadorean Amazon. However, the court’s decision is largely symbolic as the oil company now owns no assets in Ecuador, meaning the country will have to continue pursuing its case in foreign courts. The case relates to alleged environmental damage and subsequent health problems resulting from the extraction of crude oil by Texaco – another oil company later acquired by Chevron – from 1964-1990.
