Brazil's superior court denies Lula habeas corpus

Development: On 10 July, the president of Brazil's superior court of justice (TSJ), Laurita Vaz, turned down another request to free former president Lula da Silva (2003-2011) from jail.

Significance: The TSJ has so far received 146 habeas corpus requests regarding Lula. In her latest decision, Judge Vaz criticised the duty appeals court judge who ordered Lula’s release on 8 July. Despite the fact that Lula remains in jail, his leftist Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) considers its manoeuvre to have been a success, strengthening the narrative that Lula is being persecuted by the courts.
