REGION: Costa Rica and El Salvador – exceptions in a pro-mining sub-region

In 2010, Costa Rica was the first country in Central America to ban open-pit mining, citing environmental concerns. Seven years later, El Salvador followed suit and became the first country in the world to impose a blanket ban on metal mining in an attempt to protect the country’s dwindling water resources from polluting mining projects. Meanwhile, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama have remained staunchly pro-mining despite widespread opposition from indigenous communities and environmentalists.
