In brief: Brazil

*Brazil’s foreign trade chamber (Camex), a government body, has ordered technical studies to be conducted that could lead to Brazil taking a formal complaint before the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China’s decision to impose restrictions on the import of Brazilian sugar and chicken meat. The import restrictions were imposed by China back in May on anti-dumping grounds and have led to the slapping of 18.8%-38.4% import duties on these products. However, Camex argues that these measures are unjustified and have been designed to protect Chinese producers from Brazilian competition. Consequently, Camex has approved the conducting of technical studies to determine whether the restrictions imposed by China are justified and what sort of economic damage they have generated for Brazilian producers.
