Nicaragua: Thousands of Nicaraguans have taken to the streets in various departments across the country in the first of three days of public protest, calling for President Daniel Ortega to resign. Under the slogan 'together we are a volcano', the march was called by the Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (ACJD) which comprises students, civil-society groups, and the private sector. ACJD holds President Ortega responsible for the deaths of over 350 people on the latest figures (11 July) from local NGO Asociación Nicaragüense Pro Derechos Humanos (ANPDH) as part of a brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters which began in mid-April.
