In brief: Southern Cone

Region: The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan has said that the European Union (EU) is “not satisfied” with the progress that has been made in the latest round of negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) regional trade bloc; and noted that no agreement will be reached in the near future. Mercosur and EU representatives had been holding the 32nd round of FTA negotiations since the February and both sides had said they hoped to conclude the negotiations that have been ongoing since 1999. However, Hogan said that following the last technical meeting held last week to analyse the latest Mercosur proposals, “We are not satisfied with the progress made and no agreement will be reached this week”. Hogan said in particular that he considers that insufficient progress has been made in chapters such as the trade in automobiles, rules of origin, public procurement, dairy sector trade, and on geographic indications.
