* Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Mexico’s outgoing communications & transport minister, has met with Javier Jiménez Espriú, the replacement for his post appointed by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador. According to a press release by the communications & transport ministry (SCT), the meeting centred on the contentious issue of the construction of the Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de Ciudad de México (NAICM), a major infrastructure development project that will deliver a new international airport for the capital. During his electoral campaign, López Obrador strongly opposed the building of the NAICM and said that he would revise the plans for it once in office. In the past week Jiménez Espriú has come under scrutiny for a comment in which he stated that the incoming government wanted to hold a “consultation with the national community” to decide the future of NAICM. Jiménez Espriú later declared that his comment had been misinterpreted to mean the government would hold a referendum on the project, which he denied was the case. During the meeting the participants agreed to maintain a dialogue and to hold, as soon as possible, further sessions to discuss the future of the NAICM, as well as other technical issues.
