Ecuador: Ecuador’s foreign trade minister, Pablo Campana Sáenz, has announced Ecuador’s intention of joining the Pacific Alliance trade bloc (comprising Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) as an associate state. Campana made the official announcement to representatives of the Pacific Alliance during the XIII Pacific Alliance Summit taking place on 23-24 July in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Negotiations to begin considering the petition are due to take place in the first months of 2019. Ecuador is currently an observer member of the trading bloc which represents 38% of Latin American and Caribbean GDP, 50% of the total trade, and attracts 45% of foreign direct investment (FDI).
