The Venezuelan situation has continued to deteriorate since President Nicolás Maduro’s re-election on 20 May. In the absence of political leadership by the opposition, people are taking to the streets once more, often to be met (once more) with military and police repression. So many apparent tipping points have come and gone in Venezuela now that observers hesitate to forecast a denouement, not least because Maduro seems to retain the backing of the military leadership.
