Nicaragua: Concerns rise over paramilitaries

The presence of paramilitaries on the streets of Nicaragua and their role in the brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters which began mid-April and has so far left over 350 people dead  is fast attracting concerns (see our sister publication Latin American Weekly Report for more discussion of the crisis). With the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega under growing pressure to “disband” these groups, the military – which has hitherto kept a distance from the crisis – is also facing public calls to intervene.
