In brief: Brazil

* The specialised labour-rights division (MPT) of Brazil’s attorney general’s office has taken a civil action suit in the local courts demanding that the federal government only allows the proposed merger between Brazilian airplane manufacturer Embraer and US aerospace giant Boeing if the new firm can guarantee that jobs in Brazil will be protected. Embraer and Boeing, the third and largest airplane manufacturers in the world, announced their merger proposal earlier this month but this is now subject to government approval. The deal has come under intense scrutiny in Brazil over fears that it could lead to Embraer’s operations being moved out of the country, eliminating 26,600 jobs in Brazil. The MPT’s move is in line with these concerns as it asks the courts to force the government to condition approval of the deal on “the provision of guarantees that airplane production and jobs will not be transferred abroad”.
