In brief: Colombia

Colombia: Colombia’s President-elect Iván Duque has stated that his incoming administration will not negotiate any new free trade agreements (FTAs). Speaking at an event organised by the Sociedad de Agricultores, an umbrella organisation of agricultural sector unions, Duque stated that his government would instead dedicate itself to “making the most of” the FTAs that Colombia already has in place. Duque’s announcement puts into question the signing of potential FTAs between the Pacific Alliance regional trade bloc, which Colombia is a member of, and Australia and New Zealand. These possible agreements have provoked worry among some sectors of Colombia’s agricultural industry due to these countries’ highly competitive agricultural produce. In his speech, Duque also declared that his government would maintain a “permanent working group” with the local agricultural sector, an important part of his voter support base.
