López Obrador looks to seal Nafta deal

With the decisive victory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico’s 1 July presidential election, one of the big issues concerning many was how he would manage relations with the US. Perceived by many as a candidate offering a change from the old ways, including the conciliatory attitude adopted by the outgoing government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto towards the US, some had thought that López Obrador will be more willing to stand up for his country against the humiliations inflicted by its northern neighbour. One of the first tests as to whether this change in approach will materialise is in the ongoing talks over the renegotiations of the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).
