Colombia: In his last act as president, Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos, who is due to leave office on 7 August, oversaw the signing of the documents opening the public tender process for the contract to build the first line of the Bogotá city metro. The US$4.4bn project to build a 24km elevated metro line has long been promoted by the Santos government, which believes that it will help ease road traffic in Colombia’s capital. The project is being backed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank (WB), and the European Investment Bank (EIB), all of which are providing US$1.68bn in financing for the project.
