In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: Uruguay’s national statistics institute (INE) has reported that the national unemployment rate stood at 7.9% in June, 0.2 percentage points lower than the 8.1% reported the previous month. However, the June unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point higher than in June 2017, sparking concerns that job creation in the country is once again stagnating. Notably, the release of the unemployment figures coincided with the release of a report by the central bank (BCU) which warned that its preliminary economic indicators for the second quarter show signs that economic activity is slowing down in the country after GDP increased by 2.2% year-on-year in the first quarter on BCU figures.
