Venezuela: Venezuela’s supreme court (TSJ) has ordered the arrest of the national deputy Julio Borges of the opposition Primero Justicia (PJ) party, so that he can be investigated in relation to the 4 August suspected assassination attempt targeting President Nicolás Maduro. The Maduro government has accused Borges and another PJ deputy, Juan Requesens, of being the masterminds behind the attack carried out by drones. The PJ denies any involvement in the incident and has said that the moves against Borges and Requesens are part the government’s persecution of political opponents. But Borges and Requesens, who has been arrested, are facing being stripped of their congressional immunity from prosecution by the government-controlled constituent national assembly (ANC). Borges, who had travelled to Colombia to attend the 7 August inauguration of President Iván Duque, has rejected the accusations made against him and said that “nobody wants violence in Venezuela, the only promotor of violence in Venezuela is Nicolás Maduro”.
