* Moisés Kalach, the negotiation coordinator of Mexico’s Consejo Coordinador Empresrial business lobby in the renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), said that a year on from the start of the negotiations, the Mexican and US negotiating teams still have to make progress in some of the “toxic” issues included in the talks such as new rules of origin for the automobile sector and the so-called ‘sunset clause’. Kalach added that due to this he did not believe that a new Nafta deal could be reached by end of August, which has been set as the new deadline for concluding the talks. However, Kalach noted that he did not believe that failing to reach a new deal by August would lead to the abandonment of the deal insisting that the negotiations could be concluded after the new Mexican government led by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador assumes office in December.
