In brief: Region

Region: The presidents of Central America’s ‘Northern Triangle’ (Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador) have signed a declaration under which El Salvador is formally incorporated into the customs union previously formed last year by Guatemala and Honduras. The three leaders hailed El Salvador’s incorporation into the union as a significant step towards sub-regional economic integration that would allow these three countries to “have the tools to jointly face the current global economic challenges”. They noted that the new union represents a market of 31.9m people that has a combined GDP of US$11.86bn and accounts for 62.5% of all trade in Central America. El Salvador’s President Salvador Sánchez Cerén expressed his satisfaction with his country’s incorporation into the new union and along with his peers called for Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama to now join the union.
