President Evo Morales has become the longest serving head of state in Bolivia’s history. The previous record, of 12 years, six months and 22 days, was held by Víctor Paz Estenssoro. Unlike Paz Estenssoro, however, whose total tenure of the presidency was spread over three separate terms (1952-1956; 1960-1964; 1985-1989), Morales has been in power continuously since 2006. He shows no signs of being prepared to relinquish the presidential sash. Like Paz Estenssoro, he has sidestepped a prohibition on re-election to extend his time in office, but the chances of this ‘prorroguismo’ producing the same outcome (Paz Estenssoro was ousted in 1964 in a military coup after winning re-election) are slim.
