In brief: Mexico

* Javier Jiménez Espriú, who has been designated Mexico’s future communications & transport minister by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has presented the master plan for an alternative project to build a new international airport for Mexico City to the one approved by the outgoing government. López Obrador has said that he does not believe that the existing project (NAICM), which is already under construction, represents value for money. Instead, he has proposed scrapping it and replacing it with an alternative plan to expand the existing Santa Lucía military airbase, which would be turned into a civil airport. The US$13.3bn NAICM project is backed by Mexico’s business sector but López Obrador maintains that his proposed project would be cheaper and more efficient, and has called for the holding of a public consultation so that the public can decide which project is best. Presenting the Sant Lucía airport master plan, Jiménez said that it would cost US$3.53bn and could be completed in 24 months. Jiménez said that the master plan is now publicly available ahead of the proposed public consultation scheduled for 28 October.
