Doing business

One measure of how well an economy is likely to perform is the Doing Business survey carried out regularly by the World Bank. As the title suggests, the Doing Business (DB) index measures the ease of carrying out 10 business tasks in each country. These are: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across frontiers, enforcing contracts, and resolving insolvency. Each of these is measured in standard units (for example days or number of stages in an application procedure) and given a value that allows countries to be ranked. The World Bank also measures what it calls the “distance to frontier” – the distance between each economy and the highest performance in each category.
