In brief: Guatemala

Guatemala: Guatemala’s 158-member unicameral national legislature has appointed the five-member investigating committee which will consider whether to strip President Jimmy Morales of his immunity from prosecution in order to be investigated for illegal campaign financing. The committee comprises one member of the ruling Frente de Convergencia Nacional party - Rudy Werner Pereira Delgado – and four opposition legislators: Luis Fernando Montenegro Flores (Encuentro por Guatemala); Carlos Santiago Nájera Sagastume and Fidel Reyes Lee (both of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza); and Boris Roberto España Cáceres (independent). The investigating committee will present its conclusion to the legislative plenary which will vote on whether this warrants Morales being stripped of his immunity (for which a two-thirds majority, 105 deputies, is needed).
