* The Borderplex Alliance, a US lobby group that promotes business and economic development in the US-Mexico border area, has issued a statement saying that it is “cautiously optimistic” about the recent announcement that the Mexican and US governments have reached a bilateral agreement on new terms for the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta). Both the US and Mexican governments have said that the new bilateral agreement will be mutually beneficial. However, the third Nafta member, Canada, has yet to subscribe to the agreement, the details of which have not been fully released. Canada’s refusal to accept the agreement would lead to the breakdown of Nafta leaving only the Mexico-US agreement which could have negative implications for North America’s regional economy. “Nafta is essential to the economic competitiveness of North America, the dynamism of our region, and economic growth for our three great nations. As we await details on the terms of the deal, I remain cautiously optimistic about the prospects for a modernised and strengthened Nafta”, the statement signed by Broderplex Alliance’s Jon Barela reads.
