In brief: Nicaragua

Nicaragua: Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega has decided to terminate the presence of a mission of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The announcement comes days after the OHCHR released a highly critical report on the crisis in Nicaragua which began in mid-April as a result of the crackdown by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) administration on anti-government protesters which has left 448 people dead on the latest (26 July) report from local human rights group ANPDH. Released on 30 August, the OHCHR report cites “violations and abuses of international human rights law” which include the “disproportionate use of force by the police, sometimes resulting in extrajudicial killings; enforced disappearances; widespread arbitrary detentions; torture and ill-treatment; and violations of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and of peaceful assembly”. President Ortega’s decision has been criticised by the international community, including the European Union (EU) and US government.
