Costa Rica: The Costa Rican government led by President Carlos Alvarado has unveiled plans to boost the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) sector. Announced by the government’s economic coordinator Edna Camacho on 3 September, the plan is part of a four-pronged initiative aimed at reactivating the domestic economy (along with reducing bureaucracy for the productive sector, improving employability, and increasing investment in public infrastructure). Camacho revealed that, among other things, the plan to boost the SME sector includes proposals to: earmark C7.2bn (US$12.5m) from the national development bank (SBD) for 295 ventures over the next four years; reduce tariffs related to red tape for registered micro enterprises; promote tourist destinations in the country which will impact at least 800 small hospitality companies; and develop a portfolio of new productive activities for Guanacaste, Limón, and Puntarenas provinces with the aim of promoting business productivity in rural areas.
