In brief: Brazil

* Márcio Portocarrero, the executive director of Brazil’s national association of cotton producers (Abrapa), has said that the country could become the world’s second exporter of cotton lint in the 2018-2019 harvest. Speaking at an event in São Paulo, Portocarrero said that cotton lint exports could reach 1.12m tonnes next year, putting Brazil in second place before India and behind the US. It is hoped that the 2017-2018 cotton crop, which is being harvested at the moment, will yield a record 2m tonnes of cotton lint, which could be increased to 2.3m next harvest season. According to Portocarrero, Brazil will work to increase production of cotton lint in response to a verbal agreement with China that it will purchase the Brazilian product.
