Mexico’s congress turns to the Left
On 1 July 2018, Andrés Manuel López Obrador won the presidential elections in México after three attempts over the past decade. He is the first president since 1910 who will not belong to one of the country’s traditional political parties. López Obrador’s candidacy was supported by an electoral coalition between his Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party, the centre-right Partido de Encuentro Social (PES), and the leftist Partido del Trabajo (PT) – known as Juntos Haremos Historia (JHH). López Obrador’s victory spilt over to the congressional elections. His presidency will begin with massive legislative support for his political agenda.
