LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 07 September 2018

In brief: Mexico

* Mexico’s President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that this government transition team is already preparing a new round of oil exploration and exploitation auctions to be conducted after he assumes office on 1 December. López Obrador is a critic of the 2013-2014 energy sector reform approved under the outgoing government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto, which opened up Mexico’s oil sector to increased private participation; and López Obrador has said that he will review all the concession contracts awarded under the reform to make sure that they are in the interest of the Mexican state and not just oil firms. However, speaking at a 5 September press conference after meeting with his economy team, López Obrador said that his administration was preparing new oil tenders as part of its plans to “rescue” the national oil sector by boosting production. López Obrador also revealed that he was going to meet with national oil firm representatives on 8 September to discuss the upcoming tenders.
