Argentina: On 4 September the US President Donald Trump issued a statement noting that he had spoken with Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri on the telephone that same morning to discuss the Macri administration’s response to the currency crisis currently affecting Argentina’s domestic economy. According to the statement, Trump reaffirmed to President Macri the US’s “strong support for Argentina during this trying time for them”, adding that “Argentina is a long-time strategic partner of the US and a major non-NATO [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] ally”. Stating that “President Macri is doing an excellent job with this very difficult economic and financial situation”, Trump added that he had “confidence in President Macri’s leadership” and “strongly encourage[s] and support[s] his engagement with the International Monetary Fund to strengthen Argentina’s monetary and fiscal policies to tackle the country’s current economic challenges”.
