Problem Number 3: Poverty and inequality
The headline story for Latin America over the last 15 years is that, against the background of the global commodities boom (the decade running up to 2012-2013), there was significant growth and redistribution of income in some of the major economies, enhancing the size of the middle class, reducing poverty, and reducing inequalities (although Latin America still remains the region of the world with the most unequal distribution of income). For the region as a whole the end of the commodities boom has raised concern that significant socio-economic gains made in the noughties may begin to slip back. Indeed, there are some signs that poverty rates began to rise once more from around 2015-2016.
