In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s Defence Minister General Joaquim Silva e Luna has met with his Venezuelan counterpart, General Vladimir Padrino López, in the Venezuelan town of Puerto Ordaz, Bolívar state. The two defence ministers reportedly discussed border security issues such as drug trafficking, the migratory movements between their countries, and agreed to reinforce cooperation between their armed forces so as to guarantee peace. Venezuela’s defence ministry said that the meeting took place in “an environment of friendliness, camaraderie, and fluid communication”. Folha de São Paulo, the Brazilian daily, described the meeting as “surprising” considering the current antagonism that exists between the two governments over the Venezuelan migrant crisis. On migration, General Padrino López denied that there was a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and asked that Brazil help facilitate the repatriation of Venezuelans. “Venezuela is not a country with a migratory vocation towards Brazil; the migration movement is for economic reasons”, General Padrino López said, blaming the ‘economic war’ that the world is supposedly waging against Venezuela. The large number of Venezuelans fleeing their country’s economic and political crisis has been causing social tensions and violent incidents in Brazil’s border state of Roraima, which has resulted in some Venezuelan migrants returning home.
