GUYANA: Ruling party moving forward

Guyana’s People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the largest party in the ruling coalition, held its biennial congress in mid-August at which it elected a new chairman and de facto deputy leader. It was an important election given that the new chairman must be considered a frontrunner to succeed 73-year-old President David Granger as party leader – and potentially Guyana’s president. A general election is due in 2020.
