In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: Uruguay’s President Tabaré Vázquez has said that his government is “working” on more economic measures to counteract the potential negative effects that the ongoing currency crisis in Argentina could have on Uruguay’s domestic economy. Vázquez said that his economic team is constantly monitoring the situation in Argentina and that it has been adopting the necessary measures to mitigate the impact it could have on Uruguay. The president added that his government was also analysing the adoption of further measures but said that this would only be implemented “at the right time” and depending on the evolution of the situation in Argentina. Vázquez’s remarks came after a recent poll of local economists found that they have reduced their 2018 GDP growth projections for Uruguay from 3.1% to 2.9%, as a result of the negative economic perspectives of both Argentina and Brazil.
