* Costa Rican unionists have agreed to allow the Catholic Church to mediate in the ongoing dispute with the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) government led by President Carlos Alvarado over the latter’s fiscal reform proposal. The unions launched an indefinite strike on 10 September. According to the local press, as of yesterday, there were 17 blockades in place across the country. Also yesterday the government announced that the security ministry had coordinated actions with the relevant authorities to take control of the Moín port in Limón province and the Garita refinery of the state-owned oil refining company Recope in Alajuela province, among other places, to guarantee fuel supply and port services.
