In brief: Uruguay

* Uruguay’s industry, energy & mining minister, Carolina Cosse, has announced that the government has approved new tax regulations allowing individuals and organisations to claim exemption from paying import tax on certain electronic and robotic goods. Cosse explained that the new regulations are in line with the legislation approved in January aimed at promoting the development of Uruguay’s electronic, technology, and robotics sectors by offering tax breaks to firms and organisations working in these areas. “We think that this is good news for students and entrepreneurs because it is a measure that will provide more components for an industry that is under development in Uruguay”, Cosse said, explaining that in order to claim tax exemption interested individuals would have to register with the industry, energy & mining ministry (Miem).
