* Mexico’s energy regulatory commission (CRE), the federal agency in charge of regulating the electricity and natural gas markets, has approved operating licenses for two new firms seeking to distribute liquified petroleum gas (LPG) in Baja California and Baja California Sur states. The licences awarded to Sonigas and Baja Gas and Oil de México will allow these two firms to enter the LPG distribution market and break the current duopoly in LPG distribution in these north-western states. The CRE noted that the arrival of two new players to the regional LPG market, should benefit consumers as it is expected that they will now be offered lower prices. The agency also highlighted that in the last few months it has seen an increase in applications for LPG distribution licences, suggesting that there is growing interest on the part of firms to participate in Mexico’s LPG market.
