In brief: Peru

* Peru and the European Union (EU) have signed a convention according to which the EU will provide €12m (US$14m) to support Peru’s fight against the drug trade and organised crime through the training of professionals and the facilitation of institutional cooperation. The agreement was signed in Lima by Peru’s interior minister, Mauro Medina Guimaraes; the executive director of the country’s national commission for development and life without drugs (Devida), Rubén Vargas; the EU’s ambassador to Peru, Diego Mellado; and a representative from the Peruvian agency for international cooperation (APCI). The Peruvian representatives all highlighted the importance of the EU’s support in Peru’s fight against drug trafficking, while Mellado noted that the agreement reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to combatting organised crime internationally.
