* Guatemala’s agriculture & livestock ministry (Maga) has announced that it will assign Q300m (US$39m) for the purchase of food over a three-month period for 297,224 families living in the so-called ‘Dry Corridor’ (a tropical dry forest region on the Pacific side of Central America) which has been hit by drought. The drought has particularly affected the departments of Zacapa, Jutiapa, Jalapa, Baja Verapaz, Quiché, Suchitepéquez, and Retalhuleu. According to Maga, 180,513 hectares (ha) of crops have been damaged by the drought – resulting in losses of around Q695m.
