In brief: Mexico

* The latest domestic consumption figures from Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) show that private sector consumption has fallen by 0.1% in the second quarter of the year compared with the first quarter. This is the first quarterly fall in private sector consumption registered by Inegi since the third quarter of 2014 and suggests that domestic demand may be weakening. Domestic consumption is one the main drivers of Mexico’s economy and lower private sector consumption levels could significantly affect growth. In fact the Inegi figures show that overall domestic consumption fell by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, the first fall in overall consumption since the fourth quarter of 2015.
