* The government of the Dominican Republic (DR), led by President Danilo Medina, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China establishing a mechanism of political consultation. The document was inked during a visit to the DR by China’s foreign minister Wang Yi – the first visit since the two countries established diplomatic ties at the end of April after the DR severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Signed by Yi – who on 21 September inaugurated China’s embassy in the DR - and the DR’s foreign minister Miguel Vargas, the document provides for both countries to periodically carry out consultation meetings – at foreign ministry level – to address a wide spectrum of issues. An official press release by the DR presidency notes that the two delegations also discussed President Medina’s upcoming visit to China, scheduled for the end of October; issues concerning the United Nations Security Council; trade & investment; and tourism. As well as the DR, other Central American countries to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of mainland China include Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador.
