Brazil: Elections call for reinforced security

As the country with the highest homicide rates in the region, Brazil does not fare too badly where political violence is concerned – especially when compared with Mexico, where 129 politicians, amongst which 48 candidates, were killed in this year’s electoral process. That is not to say, however, that political violence is non-existent in Brazil, as demonstrated by the stabbing earlier this month of Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right presidential frontrunner for the Partido Social Liberal (PSL) in the 7 October election.
